‘Umar bin Al-Jattab (que Allah esté complacido con El) dijo:
Una vez estábamos sentados en compañía del Mensajero de Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) cuando apareció un hombre vestido con ropas muy blancas y con un extraordinario cabello negro. No aparecía en él ningún signo de fatiga por el viaje y ninguno de nosotros lo conocía. Se sentó frente al Profeta (صلى الله عليه وسلم) apoyando sus rodillas contra las rodillas del Profeta (صلى الله عليه وسلم) y colocando ambas palmas sobre sus dos muslos y dijo: «¡Oh Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)! Háblame del Islam». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) respondió: «El Islam es testificar que nadie tiene derecho a ser adorado sino Allah, y que Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) es el Mensajero de Allah; que cumplas el Salat (oraciones), pagues el Zakat, realices el Saum (ayuno) del Ramadán y realices el Hayy (peregrinación) a la Casa (Makkah), siempre que tengas recursos para hacer el viaje a ella». Él respondió: «Has dicho la verdad». Nos sorprendió ver que le había preguntado y confirmado la exactitud de las respuestas. Luego preguntó: «Hábleme de Iman». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Es creer en Allah, en Sus ángeles, en Sus Libros, en Sus Mensajeros y en el Último Día y creer en el preordenamiento (destino), en sus malas y buenas consecuencias». Él dijo: «Has dicho la verdad». Luego preguntó: «Háblame de Ihsan». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Es adorar a Allah como si lo estuvieras viendo; y aunque tú no lo veas, Él te ve a ti». Él preguntó: «Infórmame acerca de la Hora (es decir, el Día de la Resurrección)». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) respondió: «No tengo más conocimiento de ello que tú». Él dijo: «Infórmame acerca de algunas de sus señales». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Son que una esclava da a luz a su propio amo, y que encontrarás a los pastores descalzos, compitiendo entre sí en la construcción de edificios más altos». Luego se marchó. El Mensajero de Allah guardó silencio por un momento y luego me dijo: «¡Oh ‘Umar! ¿Sabes quién era el interrogador? Le respondí: «Alá y Su Mensajero lo saben mejor». El Profeta (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Él era Jibril (Gabriel); Él vino a ti para enseñarte tu religión».

Háblame del Islam». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) respondió: «El Islam es testificar que nadie tiene derecho a ser adorado sino Allah, y que Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) es el Mensajero de Allah; que cumplas el Salat (oraciones), pagues el Zakat, realices el Saum (ayuno) del Ramadán y realices el Hayy (peregrinación) a la Casa (Makkah), siempre que tengas recursos para hacer el viaje a ella».
«Hábleme de Iman». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Es creer en Allah, en Sus ángeles, en Sus Libros, en Sus Mensajeros y en el Último Día y creer en el preordenamiento (destino), en sus malas y buenas consecuencias».
«Háblame de Ihsan». Él (صلى الله عليه وسلم) dijo: «Es adorar a Allah como si lo estuvieras viendo; y aunque tú no lo veas, Él te ve a ti».
‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with them) said:
Once we were sitting in the company of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when there appeared a man dressed in very white clothes and having extraordinary black hair. No signs of fatigue of journey appeared on him and he was known to none of us. He sat down facing the Prophet (ﷺ) leaning his knees against the knees of the Prophet (ﷺ) and placing both of his palms over his two thighs and said, «O Muhammad (ﷺ)! Tell me about Islam». He (ﷺ) replied, «Islam is to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah; that you observe Salat (prayers), pay Zakat, observe Saum (fasting) of Ramadan and perform Hajj (pilgrimage) of the House, provided you have resources of making journey to it.» He replied: «You have spoken the truth.» We were surprised to see that he had asked him and confirmed the correctness of the answers. He then enquired: «Tell me about Iman.» He (ﷺ) said: «It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day and that you believe in preordainment (destiny), its bad and good consequences.» He said, «You have spoken the truth.» He then enquired: «Tell me about Ihsan.» He (ﷺ) said, «It is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him; and although you do not see Him, He sees you.» He enquired: «Inform me about the Hour (i.e., the Day of Resurrection).» He (ﷺ) replied, «I have no more knowledge thereof than you». He said, «Inform me about some of its signs.» He (ﷺ) said, «They are – that a bondswoman gives birth to her own master, and that you will find the barefooted, naked, poor shepherds competing one another in the construction of higher buildings.» Then he departed. The Messenger of Allah kept silent for a while then he said to me, «O ‘Umar! Do you know who the questioner was?» I replied, «Allah and His Messenger know better.» The Prophet (ﷺ) said, «He was Jibril (Gabriel); he came to you to teach you your religion.»

«O Muhammad (ﷺ)! Tell me about Islam». He (ﷺ) replied, «Islam is to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah; that you observe Salat (prayers), pay Zakat, observe Saum (fasting) of Ramadan and perform Hajj (pilgrimage) of the House, provided you have resources of making journey to it.
«Tell me about Iman.» He (ﷺ) said: «It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day and that you believe in preordainment (destiny), its bad and good consequences.»
«Tell me about Ihsan.» He (ﷺ) said, «It is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him; and although you do not see Him, He sees you.»
Belief Sahih al-Bukhari 50, Book 2, Hadith 43
Narrated Abu Huraira:
One day while the Prophet (ﷺ) was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel came and asked, «What is faith?» Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, ‘Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection.» Then he further asked, «What is Islam?» Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, «To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan.» Then he further asked, «What is Ihsan (perfection)?» Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, «To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you.» Then he further asked, «When will the Hour be established?» Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, «The answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents.
«Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, (the) meeting with Him, His Apostles, and to believe in Resurrection.»
«What is Islam?» Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, «To worship Allah Alone and none else, to offer prayers perfectly to pay the compulsory charity (Zakat) and to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan.»
The Book of Faith Sahih Muslim 10: Book 1, Hadith 7
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said::
Ask me (about religious matters), but they (the Companions) were in awe of asking him. Then came a man, and sat near his knees and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is al-Islam? So he (the Holy Prophet) replied: [That] you do not associate anything with Allah, and establish the prayer, pay the alms (Zakat) and fast Ramadan. He said: You (have) told the truth. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Iman (Faith)? He said: That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Apostles, and that you believe in Resurrection and that you believe in Qadr (Divine Decree) in all its entirety. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Ihsan? Upon this he said: that you fear Allah as if you are seeing Him, and though you see Him not, verily He is seeing you. He (the inquirer) said: You (have) told the truth. He (the inquirer) said: When will the Hour (of Doom) occur? He said: The one who is being asked about it is no better informed than the inquirer and I will narrate some of its signs to you. When you see a [slave] woman giving birth to her master – then that is [one] of its signs. And when you see barefooted, naked, deaf and dumb (ignorant and foolish persons) as the rulers of the earth – then that is [one] of its signs. And when you see the shepherds of black (camels) exult in buildings – then that is [one] of its signs. The (Hour) is one of the five things of the unseen. No one knows them except Allah. Then (the Holy Prophet) recited (the folowing verse):» Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it shall earn on the morrow and a soul knows not in what land it shall die. Verily Allah is Knowing, Aware.»
what is al-Islam? … «[That] you do not associate anything with Allah, and establish the prayer, pay the alms (Zakat) and fast Ramadan.»
what is al-Iman (Faith)? … That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Apostles, and that you believe in Resurrection and that you believe in Qadr (Divine Decree) in all its entirety.
